Description
This volume presents the proceedings of the jubilee Tenth International Interdisciplinary Conference Vienna Readings in Bulgarian Studies (December 2024, BCI "Haus Wittgenstein" – Vienna). The edition includes research by students and doctoral candidates from Bulgaria and abroad, who "map" the concept of the crossroads in Bulgarian culture– simultaneously as a symbol of a dilemma and as a space for discovery and the exchange of ideas. Through interdisciplinary approaches across various humanities fields, the texts explore the parallel tendencies towards introspection and dialogism, reflecting the character of the Bulgarians: open to the world, yet deeply focused on their own existence and traditions.

This volume presents the proceedings of the jubilee Tenth International Interdisciplinary Conference in Bulgarian Studies for BA, MA, and PhD students on the topic "Crossroads: Introversion and Extraversion of Bulgarian Culture. European Contexts," which took place in December 2024 in Vienna. The event was organized by the Slavic Seminar at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg, the Paisii Hilendarski University of Plovdiv, and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in cooperation with the Bulgarian Cultural Institute "Haus Wittgenstein," which kindly and hospitably provided its halls for the conference's panel sessions.
The conference also received institutional support from the Presidency of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Ministry of Education and Science. This support emphasized the importance of the initiative for presenting Bulgarian culture and academic traditions on the international stage. Invaluable is also the contribution of the National Publishing House for Education and Science "Az-buki", thanks to which this volume reaches its readers and becomes another lasting mark of the activities in international Bulgarian studies.
The edition includes research by BA and MA students from a number of foreign universities that offer academic programs in Bulgarian studies. Most of these students are taking their first steps in the academic field, precisely within the framework of Bulgarian studies. The volume also includes research by doctoral candidates in Bulgarian studies from Bulgaria and abroad. The presented texts reflect the dynamics of contemporary research, bold interdisciplinary approaches, and a keen interest in Bulgarian studies as a part of the European cultural and academic space.
The jubilee volume not only documents the achievements of the conference but also outlines future prospects for young researchers who, driven by academic curiosity and dedication, become the continuators of the traditions in Bulgarian studies and integrate them into the broader international context.
From the Editors
The jubilee tenth edition of the conference is dedicated to exploring the paths and crossroads of Bulgarian history and culture, and the manifestations of introversion and extraversion, conceptualized within broad and specific European contexts. The theme resonates with Bulgarian culture not only because of its geographical location but also due to the specific understandings of the path and the crossroads reflected in the works of poets and writers, permanently imprinted in the language, and thereby shaping people's mindset. Language is the product of the cognitive activity of many generations. It serves as a kind of memory for what has been experienced and lived through; it reflects established values, beliefs, prejudices, fears, and hopes. The images of the path and the crossroads occupy their rightful place in this worldview. These are the images that the conference participants seek to reveal.
The discussion also focuses on the parallel attitudes towards introspection and insularity on the one hand, and openness and dialogism on the other, as manifested in Bulgarian culture. This mirror of cultural processes reflects the simultaneously cosmopolitan and introverted character of the Bulgarians: open to the world, yet deeply focused on their own existence and traditions.
In recent years, Bulgarian cultural reality has actively engaged in a dialogue with various local and global cultures, revealing new research perspectives. The conference offers a space for reflection and discussion on issues related to crossroads in literature, linguistics, cultural studies, arts, as well as in the social and historical sciences.
The cultural phenomenon is unthinkable without movement, which invariably passes through crossroads marked by encounters –both good and bad– the exchange of ideas, and conflicts. In Bulgarian culture, the crossroads is often perceived as a symbol of a dilemma, but also as a meeting place and a gateway to new opportunities. A crossroads is a place to slow down, to make a U-turn, or to set off in new and unknown directions. Is it possible to map the concept of the crossroads and its dynamics? Are there universal rules for orientation and good navigation?
